Personal Statement
“In our society, the women who break down barriers are those who ignore limits.” As a young black girl in today’s society, I find myself clinging on to the women in the media that look like me. I look at these beautiful black women and aspire to be them one day. I aspire to be a symbol for other young black girls who want to see themselves represented on their television screens. I believe that the best way that I can do this is by becoming a meteorologist. Meteorology is my passion, and I can’t think of a better way to share my passion with the world than by being a weather woman. Further than this, I believe that the best place for me to learn more about my passion is at a historically black college and university. By receiving an education at an HBCU, I can create a legacy for other aspiring black, female meteorologists. I can also further uplift the importance of these institutions within this country. As I continue to follow my dream, I know that one day I will follow in the footsteps of June Bacon-Bercey, America’s first TV meteorologist, and become a symbol for other young girls like me who aspire to break the race barriers within the media.
